     Beginners Course

Kitesurfing in Newgale (Wales) with Big Blue Kitesurfing

The aim of this two-day beginner's course is to get you hooked on the best wind sport around and to arm you with all the skills you need to kite surf independently and safely. We can also give advice as to which equipment is right for you.

A Typical Beginners' Course

There is a lot to learn, so kite surfing is best taught in stages, each stage has to be mastered before combining all the skills together to achieve your first attempt at getting up on the board. Kite surfing is 80% kite skills, so it is important that you are comfortable flying the kite first. Any small kite flying experience prior to the course is going to be hugely beneficial, but it's not essential!

You will cover the following over the two days of lessons, leaving you in a position to confidently and safely get out on the water alone!

Essential safety information you need to know.
Wind Awareness, Tidal awareness, Site assessments and Safety aspects to kite surfing.

How to setting up and fly the kite, avoiding nasty knots and tangles. Then we'll teach you how to launch and land the kites safely.

Self Rescue Techniques

Body dragging, a progression of the flying skills, with more power in the water. Hugely exciting and useful as it happens a lot when you fall off whilst kite surfing

Harness Technique, A harness takes the strain off your arms and allows you to use more advanced kites. Amongst other things a harness helps you recover the board and to body drag up wind!

Finally you put all the skills you have learnt together and experience the thrill of planing along on the water powered by your kite. From here on in it is just a question of practice.

Pembrokeshire

Pembrokeshire is the most South-western county in Wales . It juts out into the Irish Sea and is exposed to the Gulf Stream from the Atlantic . This provides some of the best conditions for water sports in the UK with fairly consistent wind and waves. With outstanding coastal and mountain scenery combined Pembrokeshire has everything for an exciting and adventurous holiday for all ages and in all weathers. Pembrokeshire has over 30 sandy beaches and very high standards of water quality marked by an unprecedented number of Blue Flag beaches.

Home to Big Blue, Newgale Beach is one of the best beaches in the UK for kitesurfing. Ideal for power kiting and land-boarding the vast expanse of sand stretches for two miles and at low tide falls by up to 7m. The beach picks up the majority of swell but is not too heavy, perfect for jumping and wave riding. The waves can be knee to waist high at the south end and pick up to well over-head high at the north end. So you can pick your spot along the beach depending on the size of waves that you want. Best used 2hrs either side of high tide and ensure you have plenty of space. Restrictions apply during July and August so check the notice boards. It can get crowded but is generally capable of catering for all. The best wind direction is S (Cross shore from the left), but it works in SW, W, NW, and N (in this direction the wind is cleaner at the southern end of the beach).
