Wind:
Tarifa is famous for its wind, there are two main wind directions the Poniente which blows from the West is the lighter of the two between 10 to 20 knots and Levante which blows from the East and can reach 40 to 50 knots when Levante is strong it is usually possible to drive up or down the coast and find a beach with less wind
Tarifa town:
The little town Tarifa is situated at the most southern point of the European mainland and separates geographically the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
13km of the Straight of Gibraltar separate Tarifa and the African continent, so that the rocky summits of the Moroccan Riff Mountains can be seen on a clear day
Tarifa is also known as the wind capital of Europe and attracts water sports enthusiasts from all over the world. Two winds, the strong and warm Levante from the east and the weaker and cooler Poniente from the west, provide great conditions almost every day.
The maritime position of Tarifa is responsible for the very pleasant temperatures even in the winter months; the sea water is clean and not too cold.
In the summer months an international flair dominates the usually dreamy little village. Uncountable bars, clubs and cafes stay open till the early morning.
you can sample the typical Spanish food in many nice restaurants. Of course, fresh fish is most recommended. In the Straight of Gibraltar they catch the best tuna in the world following the traditional procedure of the Almadraba (with big nets pulled by hand).
Tarifa has more surf shops than Maui/Hawaii! Windsurfers have appreciate the amazing conditions for a long time , but since the enormous boom of kite surfing Tarifa has become their paradise. |
