Trip Highlights

Hurghada must be one of the best places to learn to kitesurf. There are three bays with the downwind one popular with windsurfers, leaving the two upwind ones with large shallow areas free for kitesurfers. There is plenty of space to practice flying the kite, bodydragging and waterstarting in shallow areas. This extends far enough from the beach to allow 100m runs before getting into deeper water. Once your skill and confidence has built up, you will be able to blast out to a sandbar approximately 1km offshore. From there you can walk up wind a little and head back to the beach. Even on the first runs you should be able to get back to the downwind end of the 2nd bay. It's no problem if you drift further downwind as there is another km of beach to land on.

Itinerary

COLONA WATERSPORTS
Colona Watersports kitesurfing centre opened June 1, 2002 at the Magawish Resort located next door to the 5* Sofitel in Hurghada, and is a kite focused school. They are affiliated with IKO (International Kiteboarding Organisation) and are training students to IKO standards leading to IKO certification. The Level I kitesurfing course starts 3 times a week and they are arranging Instructor Training Courses (ITC) twice yearly, the first one was successfully done in June 2002. Their kitesurfing instructors are IKO certified and speak English, German and Swedish.

Magawish Village
Located on its well known large beach, the Hurghada Magawish Village hotel has undergone extensive refurbishment and is now under Scandinavian management. There is a first class IKO kitesurfing centre on site and limited windsurfing facilities.The spacious bungalow rooms are spread out in large grounds and are all air conditioned and have satellite TV, fridge and telephone. The main restaurant offers a high standard varied menu and overlooks the pool and sea. If you have any strength left after a day on the water there is a nightclub, and there is a unique bar above the beach giving wonderful views of the kitesurfing area. Other facilities include three restaurants, four bars, swimming pool, gymnasium, squash and tennis courts, volleyball courts, childrens playground, supermarket, watersports and an excellent dive centre.
